Introduction

What is Finance?

What is Investment?
Investment involves the allocation of resources, typically money, with the expectation of generating an income or profit. You can invest in projects, such as a new start-up, or in assets, like stocks, real estate, or commodities. The primary goal of investment is to create wealth over time.
Types of Financial Markets
Financial markets are venues where buyers and sellers interact to trade assets. They can be physical places, like the New York Stock Exchange, or virtual places, like an electronic trading platform. There are various types of financial markets, including stock markets, bond markets, commodities markets, foreign exchange markets, and derivatives markets.
Basic Financial Instruments
Financial instruments are contracts that represent a financial asset to one party and a financial liability or equity to another. Basic financial instruments include:
- Stocks: Ownership shares in a company.
- Bonds: Debt securities issued by entities like governments and corporations.
- Derivatives: Contracts whose value is based on an underlying asset, such as a stock, bond, commodity, or currency.
- Mutual Funds: Investment vehicles that pool money from many investors to purchase a diversified portfolio of assets.
